So what's the takeaway? It's very important to note that not all inflation-related problems are created equally. It's safe to say that the practical risk of an implementation flaw is far greater than that of a common computational hardness assumption break.
Notably, the use of a transparent asset is not sufficient to guarantee safety of funds. It is true that supply transparency means that inflation can in theory be detected by an appropriate implementation, but the remediation of supply inflation could mean that transactions are reverted and honest funds are affected. Further, transparent assets would not be immune from a (very unlikely) break of a cryptographic hardness assumption that results in key recovery and theft of funds.
In contrast, the use of an opaque asset introduces the risk of implementation flaws that may or may not be detectable because of the underlying mathematics of commitments and more complex proving systems. The use of mitigating approaches like transparent migrations can assert eventual available supply consistency, but this comes with the risk of losing honest funds too. Reviews and external audits of code and new mathematical constructions becomes especially important as a way to mitigate, but certainly not eliminate, these risks.
At the end of the day, there are tradeoffs inherent in supply-audit design choices. You can choose to represent amounts in the clear, like Bitcoin does; you can be sure that the supply is what you expect it to be (or fork to ensure this in case of exploited inflation), but you sacrifice fungibility and could expose users to personal risk. Or you can choose to hide amounts like (shielded) Zcash or Monero do; you improve privacy and fungibility, but at the cost of offloading supply soundness guarantees to the correctness of proof and signature constructions.
Monero is auditable you just have to understand what you read. You take on a bit more risk by trusting the implementation of some crypto primitives but you can't do without them if you want to call the token "cash/money". Bitcoin transparency is destroying it as viable money. It's a con and the only con that matters for digital decentralized money. LN is shit privacy compared to layer 1 Monero privacy.

The total number of accessible Bitcoin is about 9 million right now.

From the New York Times:
However, the researchers added, they believe the F.B.I. has seized only about 22 percent of the commissions they have identified, and that they themselves have only been able to trace about a third of the total.
We know that the FBI has seized 144.000 Bitcoin.
This is 22% of the total amount identified by the researchers.
This means that 654.500 Bitcoin have been identified by the researchers. This is about the equivalent of the 614.000 the FBI claims that the Silk Road earned in commission.
However, these researchers claim that they have traced only about a third of the total.
This would put the total amount of Bitcoin owned by Ulbricht at around 1.8 million.
These Bitcoin will most likely never be moved. It's likely nobody will ever regain control over them.
Then there is a number of Bitcoin that were simply lost.
Of the first 100.000 block rewards, I would estimate by looking at the blockchain that about 25% have been lost, as they have never been moved from the wallet in which they were received. What happened there is that people just started using Bitcoin, mined some coins and at some point deleted the program. These are not owned by Satoshi, this would be superstitious to assume.
Anyone who believes these first blocks are still under control of someone is free to show me evidence by pointing at a block reward that has stayed still since 2009, but was suddenly moved in 2013. I can't find any, the blocks were either moved before 2012, or still remain in the same place today.
Assuming 25.000 lost blocks with a reward of 50 BTC each, we find that another 1.25 million Bitcoin have been lost.
Together this put us at over 3 million Bitcoin lost, making the total number of Bitcoin currently in circulation only 9 million.
